Canadian tennis star Bianca Andreescu has expressed deep empathy for Emma Raducanu, suggesting that the British player endured an even tougher journey after her Grand Slam triumph than she did. Andreescu, who famously stunned Serena Williams in the 2019 US Open final to capture her first major title at just nineteen, said that Raducanu’s rapid rise into global stardom was amplified by her multicultural background and the intense spotlight of the British media.
“I can definitely relate to what Emma went through,” Andreescu said in an interview ahead of her return to the WTA circuit. “But I think in her case it was even more complicated — she had so much attention not just from sports fans but from people in the UK who saw her as a national icon overnight. That’s a lot for a young person to carry.” Andreescu noted that after her own breakout year — winning Indian Wells,
Toronto, and the US Open in a stunning 2019 run — she also struggled with expectations, injuries, and burnout. “When you achieve something that big that early, everyone expects you to keep winning forever,” she explained. “But tennis doesn’t work that way. It takes time to grow as a person and an athlete.”
Both players have faced physical and mental challenges since their early success, with Andreescu taking extended breaks for recovery and Raducanu undergoing multiple surgeries in 2023. Despite their struggles, Andreescu remains optimistic about their futures, saying: “Emma’s talent is real, and she’s incredibly resilient. I have no doubt she’ll come back stronger — we both will.”
