Arif Khan, a 35-year-old alpine skier from Kashmir and India’s sole qualifier for the Milano-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympic Games, is facing significant financial hurdles that threaten his preparation due to the lack of government support for winter sports in his country.
To date, he has raised less than 4% of the required amount, as winter sports are not recognized by the National Federation and therefore receive no official funding. Currently training at the Inspire Institute of Sport, Khan has been forced to launch a crowdfunding campaign with a target of ₹7 million (approximately USD 80,158), of which only a small fraction has been collected so far.
Despite these obstacles, Khan remains determined to compete—a decision shaped by years of personal perseverance amidst the conflict in Kashmir. In a remarkable show of commitment, he even postponed his wedding to cover the cost of his training trips, with the unwavering support of his wife. His story stands as a powerful testament to determination, resilience, and passion, as he challenges institutional apathy in pursuit of his Olympic dream.
As the countdown to Milano-Cortina 2026 continues, Khan’s journey inspires not only fellow athletes in India but the global sporting community, proving that the pursuit of excellence often comes with sacrifices far beyond the field of play.
