Dehradun is preparing to make history by becoming the host city of India’s first-ever Asian Open Short Track Speed Skating Championships, an unprecedented event set to take place from Wednesday to Saturday at the Himadri Ice Skating Rink, which until now has been regarded as the country’s only Olympic-standard facility; the championship will welcome nearly 240 skaters and officials representing ten Asian nations, including powerhouses such as China and Japan as well as delegations from Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong, and Indonesia, giving the tournament a highly competitive edge and strong international projection; the Indian delegation, with 95 athletes registered, will be the largest and aims to make the most of the home advantage to shine in both junior and senior categories, with races ranging from 222 meters to 5,000 meters; ISAI president Amitabh Sharma emphasized that this championship is not an isolated milestone but rather a strategic step within a broader plan to strengthen India’s presence in both summer and winter sports, with the long-term vision of hosting the Junior World Cup before 2027, followed by a bid to stage the 2029 Asian Winter Games, and even aspiring to one day host the 2036 Winter Olympics, a development that would fundamentally transform the national sporting landscape and position Dehradun as the epicenter of speed skating in the region.
